Su carrera se ve cortada durante ocho anos a comienzos de los 50, al ser incluido en la lista negra por el tristemente ce lebre Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas. 1911Procedente del teatro, donde trabaja como bailarin y cantante, se incorpora a Hollywood a finales de los 40, dando el salto a la direccion a comienzos de la decada siguiente. Ejemplo de profesional honrado y de cierta calidad, su filmografia, no demasiado extensa, es modelica. Capaz de revalorizar cualquier guion que se pusiera a su cuidado, solo estropea un poco su intachable carrera como director en los ultimos tiempos, en que tal vez la influencia de la television, tal vez cierta fatiga creativa, le reducen a la condicion de director rutinario. Hombre de Univer sal, siempre se recordaran la modelica Atraco sin huellas (Six Bridges to Cross, 1955) y El hombre de las mil caras (Man of a Thousand Faces, 1957), biopic de indudable calidad, con un histrionico pero estupendo James Cagney. 1904-1972Forma parte del equipo de colaboradores del gran Max Reinhardt y, en calidad de tal, conoce y trabaja con Murnau disenando los decorados de El ultimo (Der letzte Mann, 1924) y Fausto (Faust, 1926). Va con el a los Estados Unidos, pero vuelve a Alemania para dirigir, en colaboracion con Robert Siodmak, Menschen am Sonntag (1929), que todavia hoy es gratamente recordada desde los criterios mas exigentes. De nuevo en America, inicia una brillante carrera como director de peliculas de serie B, hasta el punto de ser considerado con frecuencia el numero uno de este tipo de productos. Puede el espectador acercarse con confianza a cualquiera de sus peliculas con la seguridad de que no saldra defraudado. Desde la ya lejana Satanas (The Black Cat, 1934) hasta algunos de sus ultimos filmes dirigidos en Europa a comienzos de los anos 60 de tema mas o menos epico, como Anibal (Hannibal, 1960), cada pelicula de este peculiar realizador centroeuropeo es un motivo de satisfaccion estetica. Mencion particularisima merece Detour (1946), sin lugar a dudas la mejor pelicula de Ulmer y una de las mejores del denominado genero negro. Su primer western, Thun der Over Texas, lo firmo como John Warner; el se gundo, The Naked Dawn, es de una plastica impecable. Se retiro a comienzos de los 40, despues de una larga carrera que no estuvo, como se ha indicado, exenta de momentos de gloria. La llegada del sonoro lo perjudico considerablemente, por razones de idioma. 1887-1937Ralph es el mas joven de los tres hermanos Ince. Fue actor infantil sobre el escenario y dibujante en la productora Vitagraph. Actor de cine y director desde comienzos de la segunda decada del siglo XX, su carrera en la Meca del cine se extiende hasta 1934 en que marcha a Inglaterra, donde muere en 1937 en un accidente de trafico. Su hermano Thomas H. Ince es uno de los realizadores emblematicos del western mudo. Su otro hermano, John Ince, fue tambien actor y director, aunque este no llego a dirigir peliculas sonoras. En la Meca del Cine se pone a la tarea de “inventar” el cine sonoro. En efecto, sus brillantes ideas, visuales y tecnicas, colaboraron en la labor de eliminar de las peliculas sonoras las servidumbres que amenazaban con convertirlo en una solemne y anquilosada manifestacion artistica.Repasar la filmografia de Mamoulian es un trabajo estimulante, desde las iniciales y atrevidas Applause (1929) y Las calles de la ciudad (City Streets, 1931), hasta el extraordinario musical con el que cierra su carrera, La bella de Moscu (Silk Stockings, 1957). Mamoulian fue, tambien, el que dirigio la mejor pelicula interpretada por la divina Greta Garbo, La reina Cristina de Suecia (Queen Christina, 1933), un precursor del color en el cine con La feria de la vanidad (Becky Sharp, 1935), y, en fin, el realizador de tres westerns extraordinarios, a prueba de tiempos y modas.
